St. Patrick's Church, Aghyaran.

Parish Priest: Fr. J. Gilmore

Telephone 8167 0728

Sunday 19th July 2009

16th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Jesus took pity on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd.” We are all aware of a lot of turmoil and trouble in the world in general and often in our own communities and even our own families. The temptation is to either despair or to ignore. For us as followers of Christ, the only way is to see the opportunity rather than the problem and to work together at bringing Christ into our world ever more fully. We do this firstly in our homes through love and prayer. Our homes should be places where each one is glad to be. This can only happen when we make it happen for each other. We do it in our community by working together to make the parish a community of faith and hope. And we do it for our world by becoming a sign of hope because we are a people among whom Christ lives.

Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

Prayer of Solace

May Christ support us all the day long,
till the shadows lengthen
and the evening comes,
and the busy world is hushed,
and the fever of life is over
and our work is done.
Then in his mercy
may he give us a safe lodging,
and holy rest and peace at the last.

Amen.

Questions people ask

Q. What is the point of repeating Hail Marys or other prayers over and over again? To me it is totally mechanical and boring.

A. The most important functions in life are repetitive, like heart beat, breathing, eating, etc. I never heard anybody say that heartbeat or breathing were boring. The fact is that you could not live without them. Repetitive prayer need not be an empty mechanical exercise but a means of calming the mind as an aid to holding attention on sacred mysteries
