Sunday in Ordinary Time
Jesus said, "If
you want to be a follower of mine, renounce yourself,
take up your cross, and follow me." In
this one sentence from Jesus there are two things
that most of us don't want to do. Our world teaches
us to 'be yourself'. Jesus teaches us to renounce
yourself. This doesn't mean to put yourself down
but to let go of your own self-importance and
find your true self in being loved and in loving.
And then he tells us to take up our cross. Immediately
we think of suffering. Many of us have suffering
in our lives and certainly this can be our cross.
But more importantly the cross we need to take
up is that of the consequences of putting others
first in love. It is the cross of moving out of
our own small world of self-preoccupation and
living for others in our family and our community.

To
Protect Life
Loving
God, I thank you for the gift of life you gave
and continue to give to me and to all of us. Merciful
God, I ask your pardon and forgiveness for my
own failure and the failure of all people to respect
and foster all forms of life in our universe.
Gracious God, I pray that with your grace, I and
all people will reverence, protect, and promote
all life and that we will be especially sensitive
to the life of the unborn, the abused, neglected,
disabled, and the elderly. I pray, too, that all
who make decisions about life in any form will
do so with wisdom, love, and courage. Living God,
I praise and glorify you as Father, Source of
all life, as Son, Saviour of our lives, and as
Spirit, Sanctifier of our lives. Amen
Prayer for
Those Who Suffer
For those
who suffer, and those who cry this night, give
them repose, Lord; a pause in their burdens. Let
there be minutes where they experience peace,
not of man but of angels. Love them, Lord, when
others cannot. Hold them, Lord, when we fail with
human arms. Hear their prayers and give them the
ability to hear You back in whatever language
they best understand
Prayer for
the Home
Visit,
we beseech Thee, O Lord, this dwelling, and drive
far from it all snares of the enemy; let Thy holy
Angels dwell herein, to preserve us in peace;
and let Thy blessing be upon us forever. Through
Christ our Lord. Amen.
