SAINT FOR OCTOBER
- Saint Canice
Canice
was born in Co Derry around 527 and died in
603. Though his people were poor he studied
at Clonard under Finnian and at Glasnevin under
Mobhi. A deep friendship developed between himself
and Colum Cille, with whom he worked for a time
in Scotland, where he set up a number of churches.
In Ireland his principle foundation was in Aghaboe
in Ossory, but this was replaced centuries later
by his church in Kilkenny.

Each day in the Derry
Diocese we are asked to pray for our priests
named on that particular day.

Questions
people ask
Q.
My mind is constantly battling with wrong thoughts,
uncharitable, envious and impure. Are these
terrible sins ?
A. St Teresa of Avila called the imagination
the fool of the house. Imagination and memory
come up with every sort of improper thought.
Improper thoughts are to be regarded as sinful
only when they are wilful, that is, when one
deliberately nurtures them. You sound as if
you do not want them. When you talk of battling,
I wonder if an unnecessary feeling of guilt
is causing a certain obsession in your mind.
Be more gentle with yourself in accepting that
we have a fallen nature and praise God who sees
your desire to be better.

Mass in Honour of St.Teresa of Avila
will take place in the Carmelite Retreat Centre,
Termonbacca, Derry on Her Feast Day, Wednesday
15th October at 8.00 pm. All are welcome to
attend.
