The rich young man said to Jesus:
'Good Master, what must I do to inherit
eternal life?' Many people today
live as if everything can be bought, even God's
favour. We might not think of this just in terms
of buying with money but with duty, with doing
what we have to and then God somehow is in our
debt. The way of Jesus is that eternal life can
only be accomplished through love - first of all
God's love for us, which is freely given, and
then our love for God and for one another. This
way of love means giving up a lot of selfishness
and self-preoccupation just as the rich young
man in the Gospel had to give up his riches before
he could even begin to see what following Jesus
was about. The guarantee though is that it is
more than worth all our effort as this way of
love brings happiness in this life and eternal
happiness with God.

Questions
people ask
Q.
‘It is easier for a camel to pass through
the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter
the kingdom of God.’ What exactly did Jesus
mean?
A. Entering
the kingdom means accepting the beliefs, values
and behaviour advocated by Jesus. His reference
to the camel was a reaction to the rich man who
had just spurned his invitation to share with
the poor and become his follower. Too much attraction
to material wealth is a contradiction of the values
espoused by Jesus. Jesus did not condemn wealth:
he had some friends who were wealthy. But he regarded
wealth as coming with the weight of social responsibility.
